A large part of the work that Leslie does to improve the health and well-being of all species of parrots and finches is research. One part of this is the research journalism she does, locating and reviewing published peer-reviewed scientific papers that provide a strong scientific foundation for her monthly column in Parrots magazine and her books. The second area of research she is involved in is her ‘hands-on’ work with the birds directly under her care, the clients she works with, and the members of the Healthy Bird Project. All of this research is essential for being able to fine tune the details of her, “Balanced Food Plan for Parrots”, also known as the first, “Balanced Exotic Avian Maintenance Diet Food Plan”. This hands-on work helps ensure this Balanced Food Plan provides a solid approach for all parrot species.
An essential part of this work is having necropsies (animal autopsies) done when a parrot dies. The only lab we use is at UC Davis, the University of California at Davis. They are quit expensive. The pathologists we work with have access to diagnostic tools and resources not available to local agriculture departments or your trusted avian veterinarian. The results of these necropsies are vital to fine tuning Leslie’s avian nutritional work.

I can usually only support $5-10 with my orders, but I feel good that that money is being well spent and helping birds in need. Thank you again, Leslie for caring and working so hard for avian nutrition.
